LibGuides For Faculty: Information Literacy

We decided to take a look at some of our LibGuides in the light of a few performance indicators taken from the ACRL Information Competency Standards.  The examples are shown below. 

 We are inclined to think that LibGuides are a great tool for building information literacy skills.  LibGuides can model efficient search behaviors and skills that students may later transfer to more complex information environments.

 Information Literacy Performance Indicator:

 Identifies the value and differences of potential resources in a variety of formats (e.g., multimedia, database, website, data set, audio/visual, book)

Information Literacy Performance Indicators: 

•   Identifies keywords, synonyms and related terms for the information needed
  
  
• Selects controlled vocabulary specific to the discipline or information retrieval source
  
  
• Constructs a search strategy using appropriate commands for the information retrieval system selected (e.g., Boolean operators, truncation, and proximity for search engines; internal organizers such as indexes for books)

Information Literacy Performance Indicator:

Differentiates between primary and secondary sources, recognizing how their use and importance vary with each discipline
