Find the big ideas in the research question first.

Sample research question: Should community college be free to all students in New York State?
Keywords: community college, college, students, college students, New York, New York State.

More keywords: tuition, financial aid, loans, debt, debt free, costs.

Notice how the big ideas are separate ideas. They “intersect” in the research question.

Searching tips:

• In the search box, enter one big idea on each row of the Advanced Search box.
• Avoid typing in sentences or questions.
• Spelling counts.
• Try different combinations of search terms.
• For phrases, try using quotation marks to be sure the program understands the words form one idea.
