Fixed : Post screening discussion

Thank you to everyone who attended the Fixed screening!

There was a lively discussion afterwards about the many issues brought up in the film:

  • How can technology extend human capabilities?
  • Who defines who is Able and who is Dis-Abled?
  • Who decides what a necessary surgery/intervention is?
  • How can we do a better job to accommodate those with disabilities?
  • Is this just the next step of human evolution?
  • How will these technologies continue to develop?
  • How does poverty affect access to new technologies to help people with disabilities?
  • Who will get these enhancements and have access to them? Those who need them or who can afford them?
  • How have these technologies helped to improve everyone's health?
  • How does the media distort attention to certain disabilities/illness?

If you missed the screening, FIXED is available in the library for 1-week loan. Please bring your WCC ID for check out.

From botox to bionic limbs, the human body is more “upgradeable” than ever. But how much of it can we alter and still be human? What do we gain or lose in the process? Award-winning documentary, Fixed: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement, explores the social impact of human augmentation. Haunting and humorous, poignant and political, Fixed rethinks "disability" and "normalcy" by exploring technologies that promise to change our bodies and minds forever.
