Your Assignment

Task: Write a research paper (1800-2200 words) on a significant and specific issue, topic, or problem that interests you. You will: 

  1. Compose a specific, challenging, open-ended research question. This question should be narrow enough to answer in the space given, interesting to you, and have multiple possible answers. 
  2. Take a clear, nuanced, and contestable stance (your thesis statement). Someone should be able to reasonably disagree with your thesis statement. 
  3. Research your topic using at least four scholarly sources
  4. Respond to alternate perspectives on your subject. 
  5. Develop your argument using an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion
  6. Include a Works Cited page in MLA format.

Topic Proposal due: October 21

Research question due: October 28

Final research question and Works Cited page due: November 4

Intro due: November 11

Outline OR First body paragraph due: November 18

FULL Rough draft due: December 2

Final Draft due: December 16

*Each week’s assignment must be uploaded to Brightspace in order to receive credit. Weekly assignments related to the essay are each graded separately under the homework writing category.  

*The final draft is graded according to the class rubric.
