Assignment - Reaction Paper: Cuban Missile Crisis
Guidelines: read chapters 4 and 6, the PowerPoint notes, and watch the documentary, the "Cuban Missile Crisis" (History Channel). Use the following bullet points as a rough outline and to organize the essay/response.
1. Based on the documentary, briefly summarize the genesis (roots) of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Use examples from the film, historical newspaper (e.g. the New York Times), and any background reading to elaborate on the summary.
2. Based on your understanding of the levels of analysis and tools of statecraft (see chapters 4 & 5), discuss the options available to the United States and the choice President Kennedy's Executive Committee eventually made to change the behavior of the Soviet Union (3 - 4 paragraphs).
3. What finally led to the end of the crisis? Describe the diplomatic processes that led to a sort of 'Nash Equilibrium'.
4. From Liberalism perspective, a nuclear war was avoided because reason prevailed. What would you consider as the most rational steps President Kennedy and his team took to achieve their goals?
5. Provide a separate reference page (including the use of the textbook) and in an APA format.
