Black History Month 2024: Home

African Americans and the Arts

Welcome

About this Guide

This guide is intended to compliment the recognition of  Black History Month by providing information and resources about this year's theme, African Americans and the Arts. The collections at the Harold L. Drimmer Library are rich and vast in materials highlighting the contributions and influence of African Americans in the Arts. Considering the depth and breath of the artistic contributions of enslaved Africans and their descents, this guide is not an exhaustive resource of the collection, but a cross section to resources at the Harold L. Drimmer Library and local community.

Origins of Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements by African Americans and their role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” lead by historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
