Plagiarism Resource Center: Test Your Knowledge

Plagiarism Awareness and Prevention

Test Your Citation and Plagiarism Knowledge *(may not play well with all browsers/devices)

To determine what citation style or format to use you should:

A. Use the format appropriate for that discipline (APA for Psychology courses; MLA for English courses etc).
B. Always use MLA format. It's the only citation style used at WCC.
C. Use the format assigned by your professor.
D. Use the format you know best.
E. Use the appropriate format for each source within your paper (MLA for sources from a Literature journal; APA for sources from Psychology journals etc.)

Incorrect. When preparing a paper for a course, presentation or for publication, you will always be instructed on the format to use.

Always use the format assigned by your professor. If you're not sure which format to use, ask.

Incorrect. MLA, along with APA, are two of the most common formats assigned at WCC, but not the only ones.

Always use the format assigned by your professor. If you're not sure which format to use, ask.

Correct! Always use the format assigned by your professor. If you're not sure which format to use, ask.

Incorrect. Using the improper format will lead to a lower grade on your paper.

Always use the format assigned by your professor. If you're not sure which format to use, ask.

Incorrect. With this method you would be mixing multiple formats within one paper, this is never correct.

Always use the format assigned by your professor. If you're not sure which format to use, ask.

To create a parenthetical or in-text citation for a source with no author you should:

A. Use Anonymous where the author name would have gone.
B. Use the full title of the work in quotation marks where the author name would have gone.
C. Use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks where the author name would have gone.
D. Look up the name of the journal owner or website creator and use their name.
E. Skip it. If there's no author you don't need to create a citation.

Incorrect. The only time to use Anonymous is if it is listed as the author name in the original. For MLA and APA formats, you should use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks if there is no author.

Incorrect. You don't need to use the full title, but long enough to not confuse it with another source on the works cited list. For MLA and APA formats, you should use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks if there is no author.

Correct! For MLA and APA formats, you should use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks if there is no author. Be sure the title is long enough to not confuse it with another source on the works cited page.

Incorrect. Although it's possible that a website creator has written all content on a page, this is not the most reliable way to determine author name. For MLA and APA formats, you should use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks if there is no definite author.

Incorrect. Having no citation can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional. For MLA and APA formats, you should use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks if there is no author

The best way to show your professor you are not plagiarizing is to:

A. Use lengthy passages of direct quotes within your paper along with proper citation and documentation.
B. Not rely on others work at all. Write it all off the top of your head.
C. Use only information that can be considered common knowledge, no citations needed!
D. Paraphrase the majority of source material while adding a few direct quotes for emphasis. Include proper citation and documentation.
E. Copy a single source word for word so your professor can easily find it.

Incorrect. While you are technically not plagiarizing, the majority of your paper should be your own words. Your professor wants to hear what you have to say, not a bunch of other people.

Incorrect. Some assignments like reaction papers and argumentative essays are based on your own opinions, but even these will require outside resources to support the statements your are making.

Incorrect. It's quite unlikely you will be assigned a topic that can be satisfied by using only common knowledge. Even more unlikely it will be very interesting to read.

Correct! The bulk of your paper should be in your own words, relying on the resources you found to support the argument you are making. Proper citation and documentation gives the original authors credit for their ideas.

Incorrect! Copying word for word from a single work is a sure way to be accused of plagiarism. Most assignments will ask you to incorporate information from multiple sources.

A Works Cited Page organizes citations:

A. In the order they are quoted in the paper.
B. Chronologically by date of publication.
C. Alphabetically.
D. By source type (all articles, all books, all webpages together etc.)
E. Haphazardly.

Incorrect. Organizing sources by the order they appear might seem logical, but the works cited page contains only one complete citation per source, while you will be quoting that source multiple times.

The works cited page should be organized alphabetically, usually by author's last name. If there is no author or organization name use the title of the work

Incorrect. For citation formats such as MLA, the in-text or parenthetical citation does not note the year of the original source. This would make a works cited page organized by publication date difficult to use.

The works cited page should be organized alphabetically, usually by author's last name. If there is no author or organization name use the title of the work

Correct! The works cited page should be organized alphabetically, usually by author's last name. If there is no author or organization name use the title of the work.

Incorrect. You can often find a source in multiple formats (in a print book and in an electronic database; via streaming video and on a dvd) making organizing by source type nearly meaningless.

The works cited page should be organized alphabetically, usually by author's last name. If there is no author or organization name use the title of the work

Incorrect! You will lose points on your paper if you do not properly format your works cited page.

The works cited page should be organized alphabetically, usually by author's last name. If there is no author or organization name use the title of the work

Westchester Community College considers plagiarism to be:

A. Copying another person’s actual words without the use of both quotations and documentation.
B. Presenting another person’s ideas or theories in your own words without documentation.
C. Using information that is not considered common knowledge without acknowledging the source.
D. Using a paper writing “service” or having a friend write the paper for you.
E. All of the above.

Using quotation marks with an in-text citation shows your reader that you are using an authors exact words to support your point, but it is not the only way to properly incorporate source material into your paper.

ALL of the above examples can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether they are done intentionally or unintentionally.

While you may wonder why you need to include a citation on a passage you have paraphrased yourself, it's the original author's ideas that need to be credited through citation, whether they are quoted directly or indirectly.

ALL of the above examples can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether they are done intentionally or unintentionally.

It's true that any information used in your paper not considered common knowledge needs to be cited properly (using in-text citations and a works cited page), but this isn't the only way to plagiarize. And while you could write a paper using only common knowledge, we already know all that stuff (that's why it's called common knowledge), so it's probably going to be pretty boring.

ALL of the above examples can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether they are done intentionally or unintentionally.

While using a paper writing service (or a friend) to do your work for you is considered plagiarism, ALL of the above examples can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether they are done intentionally or unintentionally.

Correct! All of the above examples can lead to a charge of plagiarism, whether they are done intentionally or unintentionally.
