ELI-ESL 1650 (English for Academic Purposes): Evaluating your Sources

Evaluating Sources

Academic research represents just one aspect of why students seek information. In an age dominated by social media, the rapid spread of false information has become a significant concern. Many individuals share content online without verifying its accuracy, often trusting the source rather than the information itself. This tendency highlights a pressing need for greater discernment; we all bear a social responsibility to evaluate the information before retweeting or reposting it. While sharing information may seem harmless, it implicitly communicates a belief in its accuracy and reliability.

The consequences of fake news and misinformation can be profound, underscoring the importance of fostering a more responsible approach to information sharing. Implementing the ACT UP method can guide you all in taking a more socially responsible stance regarding the information they encounter.

While critically examining scholarly resources can be difficult, the ACT UP methodology promotes a shift in the research paradigm, encouraging the inclusion of diverse voices. Engaging you all in discussions about publishing privilege and the systemic biases within classification systems equips them with the skills necessary for making informed decisions throughout their research endeavors. By using the ACT UP approach, students can recognize the importance of distinguishing fact from fiction and the role these research skills play in promoting social justice across all areas of their lives. Librarians play a vital role in guiding students on how to navigate this landscape effectively.
