What is an In-Text Citation?

In-text citations are brief references within the body of your paper that direct the reader to the entries on the Works Cited page.

An in-text citation consists of the author's last name and the page number where you found that information, in parentheses.

Example:

(Julian 132)

In-text citation within the body of your paper.

            Quoting the author directly

“A bigger problem is that cognitive behavioral therapy can only work if the patient is motivated, and many anxious children have approximately zero interest in battling their fears” (Julian 32).

Paraphrasing (putting the author's ideas into your own words)

One problem with cognitive behavior therapy is that the patient must be motivated in order for it to be successful, and many children are not willing to face their fears (Julian 32).
