Integrated Learning Project on the Environment


Welcome to the Westchester Community College's Library   Research Guide for the Integrative Learning Project (ILP) on The Environment.

The idea of this project is to have a common theme across campus that links coursework, events and extracurricular activities. 

This guide offers a selection of resources (articles, books, websites, etc.) about various issues concerning the environment.   If  you have any comments, suggestions, or requests about resources to add, please contact us via the  'email me' button on the right.

Join NOAA scientist Katharine Egan on a journey through the Office of Ocean Exploration and Research's approach to deep-sea exploration. Why do we explore the deep, how do we do it, and what do we hope to learn? The talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

How To Be A More Sustainable Student

Professor Robert Collis has been a WCC Faculty member for 14 years, teaching in the Biology department. He is the Curriculum Chairperson for the Environmental Science and Environmental Studies programs, and is also a faculty advisory for the Environmental Club.  While he now mostly teaches Anatomy and Physiology courses, he never lost his passion for environmental conservation and sustainability, integrating these concepts into his courses wherever possible. He is a firm believer that broad scientific literacy is essential, and is very happy to be a part of Earth Week 2020.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Binghamton University Libraries invites you to attend our virtual event, 50 Years of Earth Day: A Virtual Panel Exploring the Evolution of Sustainability Education since 1970 on Wednesday, April 22nd from 10-11am. Come and join us as we talk with sustainability experts, researchers, and students from Binghamton on topics such as shifting pedagogical styles, diverse approaches to sustainability research, changes that the field has experienced to date, and the challenges it may face in the future. The panel is open to any and all that are interested in attending.

From the Native Plant Center (

The  Spring Landscape Conference is March 9, here on campus. The theme is Places for Pollinators: Designing Welcoming Landscapes. We have a limited number of guest passes for motivated professors/students.

The Native Plant Center’s 21st annual Native Plant Sale is April 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., here on campus. We welcome volunteer students to help us on the following days (unloading delivery trucks and 11,000 plants, setup, watering, etc.): April 17, April 20-23, and sale day, April 25.

Tuesday April 7, the Center for Environmental Policy at Bard College is coordinating a series of 52, university-hosted webinars, one in every state of the country, focused on ambitious but feasible state and local solutions to help solve climate by 2030. Help us engage 300,000 students across the country in this conversation on April 7. 

The program is built to integrate into multiple subjects, so you don't need to be a science course to participate. The challenges posed by solving climate change range across history, science, business, culture, economics, psychology, religion, government, media, journalism and the arts. We will offer disciplinary entry points for follow-up discussion to the state-level, solutions-focused webinars, regardless of the class you are teaching.

What can you do? (1) Organize a live screening with your class of your state Power Dialog, or (2) Assign the live or recorded versions of the state Power Dialog as homework, and discuss them in your course.  The week of April 7, please use the opportunity provided by the state webinars to Make Climate a Class.
