In 2015, President Obama proposed that free tuition be offered at community colleges across the country for any student who maintains a 2.5 grade point average (Hosansky).


Some states and cities are not waiting for federal legislation to be passed. Tennessee, New York State, and the city of Chicago have all implemented free tuition programs that are funded in a variety of ways (Hosansky).


Pro Opinion: As he announced his program for free community college education in 2015, President Obama said "a college degree ensures you are always employable" (Barak Obama, as cited by Hosansky). 

Con Opinion: According to professor of economics Richard Vedder, "there is no such thing as free college. Someone has to pay for it" (Vedder, as cited in Hosansky)
