Argumentative Issue Paper

Writing an argumentative paper on a controversial issue requires that you look at both sides of an issue and take a position on one side or the other.  You not only take a stand on an issue, but you must defend it against opposing points of views.  Your argumentative paper, therefore will involve advocacy and persuasion.

How do I Research an Argument?

Formulating a well-supported argument takes work. Strong arguments are supported by evidence, and finding evidence means doing some research.

This guide will help you:

1.) Select an arguable topic and define a scope/parameters for your investigation.

2.) Discover existing viewpoints/arguments around your topic, including viewpoints that are counter to your point of view.

3.) Develop questions including any facts you don't know, find background information, and vocabulary around the topic.

4.) Locate reputable evidence in sources (books, articles, websites, films, statistics) that support your argument.

5.) Cite those sources responsibly using MLA format.
