GEO101 - Lotstein : World Regions Diary: Your Assignment

Your Assignment

Complete project instructions are available in your course shell in BlackBoard

For this assignment you will be creating a fictional character and writing a diary based on their life. You have a lot of flexibility here since the character is made up by you: pick any age, gender, race or occupation you like—get creative!

Here’s where you don’t have flexibility. Your character must live in a real-world region that you will research in depth.

Your research sources should include newspapers, magazines, at least one scholarly article in a geography journal, and one other source such as an e-book or database.  The newspapers and magazines must be relatively recent (2015 or after), so that your character can discuss topical, up-to-date events!

Once you pick your region*, research its:

  • Physical geography and environmental issues
  • Population and settlement characteristics
  • Cultural patterns
  • Geopolitical framework
  • Economic and social developments
  • Challenges and opportunities facing your region.

You may choose any combination of countries within your selected geographic region

Write at least six diary entries, one for each of the above categories. For example, if your chosen region includes a notoriously polluted body of water (physical geography and environmental issues), you could write about your character wanting to swim but not being able to. If the region is going through a period of recession (negative economic and social developments), perhaps your character would describe their difficulties in paying their rent.  Does your character live in a country that has just legalized same-sex marriage? Consider describing how they feel about that. You may choose any combination of countries within the selected geographic region.

Your diary will include an MLA works cited page of all of the sources you used.

Use the library databases (see the Finding Articles tab) or one of the recommended online sources (see the Online Resources tab) to research your topic.

Directions on how to create an Annotated Bibliography and examples, can be found under the Annotated Bibliography tab.

You can find information about MLA format under the Citing and Plagiarism tab on this guide.

To get help with research on your country from a librarian either in person, by phone, email, text, or chat. Look under the Get Help tab to see how to contact the librarian who taught your library session and get information on library hours.

If you need additional information on your assignment and specific due dates, check BB first, THEN ask your professor.
